Selecting a lock

There are many types of locks, and the type you choose will depend on the entry point you are trying to protect.  If you have security issues with your property, the local constabulary will be able to provide some advise and provide a list of accredited locksmiths.  Window locks are of a different design to door locks, and there is a wide variety of  types  of each on the market. Combination locks for padlocks are very common in certain situations such as securing outbuildings and sheds. Bristol locksmiths can provide replacement locks for mortice locks, provide locks suitable for UPVC doors and windows, repair rims to locking systems and replace padlocks for digital locks.  Locks should meet the standards of the BS3621 to ensure that you are fitting a quality lock.   All locks meeting the British kitemark standard have been tried and tested on the market and are recommended by the police and locksmiths. Some insurers insist on certain types of locks and that they meet the requirements of the BS3621 so whether you are fitting a complete new security system or a lock to a single entry point, you should check with them whether they have any particular preferences of models or types of locks.

Most locksmiths will advise that deadbolts are fitted to external doors as well as the knob.  Glass entry doors should have keys on both sides instead of a lever for maximum security.  Deadbolts can be single or double cylinder. Single cylinder deadbolts do not need a key to open the door from the inside, but the disadvantage is that if it is installed on a door with glass in it, the thief only has to break to glass to gain entry. Double cylinder deadlocks have a key on each side of the lock. There is no knob, so a key is required to open it. A double cylinder deadlock is more secure than a single cylinder deadlock and is useful if you have small children as they cannot get out. The downside is that if you lose the keys, you cannot get out.  A keyless deadlock can be operated by a remote control, keypad or fingerprint reader.  They are expensive, but means that you do not have a key which can be lost or misplaced.  Casement windows, sliding windows and double hung windows can be protected in a variety of ways.  Casement windows cannot be opened from the outside, providing you remember to lock them.  Fitting a cam lock to a sliding windows or double hung window can provide extra security, but a determined burglar will always find a way.  The objective of fitting good quality locks is to make it difficult for anyone to enter the property without the key.

Whether your property is commercial or residential premises,  security is very important, and you should always get a reputable locksmith to fit your new or replacement locks. Check that the locksmith is registered with the Master Locksmith Association (MLA) or the Institute of Certified Locksmiths (ICL).  The MLA also provides a “Guide to minimum security requirements”.
